Frequently Asked Questions

What is the time commitment for the Confronting Whiteness Online Experience?

There are nine sessions in the online experience. Most groups opt to complete the sessions in nine weeks. Some groups may meet every other week. Prior to each session, participants are expected to complete readings and film viewings that can take 2–4 hours. Live sessions are 90 minutes each week.

Who leads the online experience?

Groups are guided and facilitated (not led or taught) by specially trained Confronting Whiteness facilitators. All facilitators have completed the nine sessions of Confronting Whiteness as participants as well as a facilitator training. They maintain ongoing relationships of accountability with other facilitators.

What can I expect from the online experience?

This unique experience is designed to be transformative. Expect to be intellectually, spiritually, and relationally engaged and stretched. Facilitators are trained to emphasize non-judgmental space in which groups members can expect to be held and supported with open hearted awareness of the challenges faced in the process. Group sessions include meditation, conversation, discussion, reflection, and guided sharing within the guidelines of a structured process.

What about the group—who is there and how many in a group?

Group members are often invited by facilitators. Some groups will include those who already know each other; some groups will be comprised of people new to each other.

A successful online experience will include between five and ten participants. If a course has fewer than five participants, we will cancel that group and work with participants to reschedule their registration to another session. Enrollment will close at ten registrants.

If you would like to request a private classroom for a group of up to ten participants (and no fewer than five), click here to fill out a private classroom request form. Private classrooms will be matched with an available, trained facilitator.

Who should join an online experience?

The Confronting Whiteness journey was primarily designed for people racialized as white, but is open to any and everyone as we have all been impacted in different ways by racism and whiteness. Discussions of race involving both white people and people of color often end up harming or exploiting the people of color, therefore our facilitators are specifically trained to create spaces where this harm rarely occurs, and if it does, it is addressed and rectified immediately. If you are a person of color interested in joining a Confronting Whiteness course, please know that the course is free of charge for you. If you’d like to join, we invite you to reach fill out the submission form and/or contact out to our team to ensure a transformative experience. Email us at confrontwhiteness@gmail.com, and we will connect you with the trained facilitator.

How do I become a Confronting Whiteness Facilitator?

First, go through the Confronting Whiteness Journey as a participant. At the close of the nine sessions, participants will be invited to converse with their facilitator about next steps for becoming a facilitator.
